Competitions

Each season the Club holds a number of competitions, which members are entitled to enter.

There are various cups and trophies up for grabs, but the main aims of the competitions are to create opportunities for members to stretch themselves creatively and to receive supportive and open feedback on their efforts. And to have fun!

For the 2018-2019 season there are four types of competition:

Formal

Three Formal competitions are held during the season. These are usually judged externally.

Two of the competitions have subjects which are intended to act as a theme and inspiration and which will be taken into account by the judges. The other competition is “open”, meaning members may pick any subject.

Members can submit up to three digital images and up to three prints in each competition.

Points are accumulated in the two categories as follows: 1st = 7 points; 2nd = 5 points; 3rd = 3 points; commended = 2 points; each unplaced entry = 1 point.

There are awards for the highest aggregate scores at the end of the season.

Informal

In addition, three Informal competitions are held during the season. Similar rules to the Formal competitions apply, though judging is usually done internally and digital images and prints are judged together in a single competition.

Although there is no cup or trophy to strive for, members benefit from receiving detailed feedback on their efforts, with the subjects specially chosen to encourage experimentation.

Club Annual

The Club Annual competitions are held at the end of the season and are judged externally.

Members may submit up to five digital images and five prints. This is an open competition.

Each entry attracts up to thirty marks and there are awards for the highest individual mark in each category and highest aggregate score in each category.

NYSDPA

The North Yorkshire and South Durham Photographic Association (NYSDPA) organises two annual competitions: the Inter-club competition, which the Wensleydale Camera Club can enter; and the Silver Salver, which members can enter as individuals.

The Club may submit up to six digital images and six prints for the Inter-club competition, and invites members to put forward images and prints for pre-selection in the Club’s entry.

Individual members may submit one digital image and one print for the Silver Salver competition. Entries are collated by the Club, which submits those entries on behalf of members.

Members putting forward entries in the form of prints for the NYSDPA competitions should also provide digital copies.
